Sorry, Scrooge McDuck, there’s a richer fictional character out there — and he’s got enough gold to fill a Lonely Mountain.
According to Forbes’ Fictional 15, Smaug, the “hyperintelligent” dragon from J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit,” is now the richest made-up character on the planet, worth a cool $62 billion. (Apparently, a lot of scientific dragon analysis went into that figure, as Forbes took into account the creature’s size to see how big his bed of gold coins is).
As for Scrooge McDuck, he actually dropped off the list this year, along with Gordon Gekko (“Wall Street”), whose ill-gotten money is apparently sleeping.
Among the other fictional characters making Forbes’ roundup include “Twilight” patriarch Carlisle Cullen; Iron Man himself, Tony Stark; Charles Foster Kane, the antagonist of “CItizen Kane”; billionaire playboy and part-time masked crusader Bruce Wayne; Forrest Gump (thanks to Bubba Gump Shrimp, of course); and “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” heroine Lisbeth Salander.
We may get a glimpse of Smaug and his giant pile of gold in Peter Jackson’s “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” out this Christmas. And Iron Man and Batman will be battling it out at the box office this summer to see whether “The Avengers” or “The Dark Knight Rises” can make more bank on the big screen.
You can check out some of the richest fictional characters below. Head to Forbes to see the full list.
